It’s Monday, What are You Reading? is a meme hosted with a Kidlid focus by Jen from Teach Mentor Texts, Kellee and Ricki from Unleashing Readers and originally created with an adult focus by Sheila at BookJourney
I tend to divide my reading between children's and young adult lit, adult lit, and professional reading.
On Thursday, I spent the day reading Ann Martin's Rain Reign. I fell in love with Rose, her sweet dog and her bravery. This is a wonderfully moving story beautifully told from Rose's point of view.
On Friday, I decided to read the newest book from one of my teaching mentors, Kelly Gallagher. In the Best Interests of the Students is classic Gallagher - smart, courageous, and to the point. Gallagher pulls no punches in his criticisms of the Common Core Standards, but his reasoned approach is refreshing when some people want to throw them all out and start fresh. Gallagher's lesson ideas for both reading and writing workshop are easy for teachers to implement but use methods that are always in the best interests of the students. Very highly recommended.
Ron Ritchhart's Making Thinking Visible changed my instructional practice for the better more than any other one professional development experience over my 14 years of teaching. His new book, Creating Cultures of Thinking: The 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools, is just as thought provoking. I believe this book offers an excellent blueprint for schools wanting to develop a true culture of learning rather than the current trend towards cultures of standardization and assessment.
